ACTINIC KERATOSES

Actinic Keratoses (AKs) are coarse, scaly patches on the skin due to excessive sun exposure. AKs can potentially evolve into severe skin cancers. It is estimated that 40% of squamous cell carcinomas, the second most common cause of skin cancer fatalities in the United States, originate from AKs. Without a skin biopsy, distinguishing an AK from a squamous cell carcinoma can be nearly impossible for a doctor. Organizations such as the American Cancer Society, the Skin Cancer Foundation, and the American Academy of Dermatology all advise that individuals with AKs seek medical treatment.

WHAT CAUSES ACTINIC KERATOSES?

Prolonged sun exposure is the primary cause of AKs. Therefore, the most effective prevention involves a comprehensive sun protection strategy that includes wearing sun-protective clothing, avoiding the sun during midday, seeking shade, and applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15.

WHAT TREATMENT OPTIONS ARE AVAILABLE?

Our clinics provide a two-step treatment for Actinic Keratoses on the face or scalp, combining Levulan and Blu-U Blue Light therapy. The Levulan topical solution, when applied, transforms into a chemical that significantly increases the skin cells' sensitivity to light. Exposure to Blu-U light then leads to the destruction of the affected cells. This method has proven effective in clinical trials and might be covered by your insurance.

HOW DOES THE LEVULAN BLUE LIGHT THERAPY TREATMENT WORK?

The initial step involves applying the Levulan solution to the skin. This unique solution, a naturally occurring acid in the body, heightens the sensitivity of the AKs to light.

Following a set waiting period, the treatment area is illuminated with a special blue light that eradicates the AKs. During this phase, many patients in clinical trials reported experiencing a stinging and/or burning sensation, which typically subsides immediately post-treatment. Some may see temporary redness and swelling of the treated areas and surrounding skin, usually resolving within four weeks.

CAN BLUE LIGHT THERAPY BE USED FOR OTHER DIAGNOSES?

Blue light therapy, which utilizes light without drugs or antibiotics, can also be employed to manage moderate acne. The treatment is straightforward—patients sit near the light for about 15 minutes per session, as prescribed by their doctor. These treatments are considered safe and pain-free. Unlike AK treatments, blue light therapy for acne generally is not covered by insurance plans.
